Neurolinguistic Programing
Neurolinguistic programing is another cognitive based intervention that has been evaluated as an MRI anxiety intervention. This intervention is probably one that most technologists have never heard of, which is why it is included in this chapter. The other reason is that it is very effective in helping with phobias, with claustrophobia being the number one reason for MRI anxiety.
Neurolinguistic programing (NLP) is a cognitive therapy used to treat people who have non-specific phobias142. The ultimate goal of using this intervention is to replace negative associations with MRI exams with more positive ones142. A study conducted in 2010 evaluated NLP as an alternative to using general anesthesia in patients who were not able to complete their MRI exam142. Study results showed a 76% success rate using NLP for patients who had previously failed to complete their MRI142.
NLP as an intervention has several limitations, which include requiring one hour to perform the technique142. Furthermore, this technique involves 20 days of specialized training for technologists over a six month period142. That being said, this intervention may be a good alternative to sedation by general anesthesia as more non-sedation interventions for MRI anxiety are required20. NLP is non-invasive and doesn’t come with the risks associated with general anesthesia; moreover, it is less expensive, which may potentially reduce healthcare costs in the long run.
